Just a caution about relying on online access to statements - in some cases, banks and other financial institutions may only keep them accessible for a specified period.

1. Should the IRS claim you did not file a return.
How are you going to prove it, if you do not save all of your returns.

2. Yes, you can save checks and statements online.
A lot of banks will charge $ 5 to $25 to provide copies.
Free copies are only avaiable for a few months.
Then there is the control issue - Do I want to be subject to the bank's policy & timeline when I need copies.

3. One issue with having scan copies in the computers, Remember to convert the backup to new hardware and software.
How much backup was save using Lotus and save on 5 1/2 inch disk?

Excellent article, Jeff. My wife and I scan everything and save it to our hard drive - that way we have a copy if need be. I figure since storage is cheap and it doesn't cost us anything, we may as well save it. Backups, of course, are essential, as are paper shredders.
