@ Jacque

Wow! I have never heard of an increase of that much. I'm not aware of any "limit" but I'm confident they will lower them once they have been "reassessed".

Our property taxes increased by 100% this year. I contested them back in April when I read in the paper that they were being "reassesed."
We had the home re-appraised and that company provided the necessary comps. Then we submitted the required documents to the County Board of Review. We never received any notice from the County Board of Appeals and, of course, expected the taxes to be lowered. They increased by 100% from last year - from $4700 to $9400. Is there a limit as to how much one's property taxes can increase in any one year?
Jackson County - Illinois

It's quite a complicated process: time-consuming and made difficult by the fact that, at least in our county, you have to track down the specific plat number and other technical data identifying comparable properties you use in your argument. It's not easy to find this information -- the county took it offline to protect people's privacy. Also, our tax bills don't show the details of what the county thinks it's taxing you for: you have to order an itemized statement, which takes time to get, reducing the amount of time between receipt of the tax bill and the deadline for protesting.

Semi-Demi-Ex-Boyfriend did order an itemized bill after he moved into a new-to-him house. And lo! What should he find but that the county had been charging previous homeowners for a swimming pool! And for several more water outlets (we get dinged extra for every faucet in the house!) than the place had. The county reduced his tax bill, but it refused to refund the amounts fraudulently taken from the previous owner.

When he sold that house and moved to Sun City, he was wise enough to the county's shenanigans that he immediately ordered an itemized assessment for that house. Now he learned that the builder had exaggerated the square footage of the houses! The square footage measured by the appraiser was significantly less than what he, his neighbors, and the tax assessor had been told. So the builder got more per square foot than the houses were worth, and the owners had been paying more tax than they owed.
