It interesting to see how trends have evolved. Getting the same things for less seems to be very popular. I am often around people that prefer to go to consignment or thrift stores for clothes. Even stores like TJ Maxx, Ross and Marshalls are always packed with customers. More than once I have complimented someone's purse, shirt, jewelry, etc. and discoverd that they've paid next to nothing for it. People know where to find a bargain.

@Craig Yes slow and steady does win. Too often do I see young people that lose their minds trying to find the newest business plan or get rich quick plan.

I am with Miranda... "frugal is in." This is a goal that I have been working towards and have even read a few books on successful financial practices. So far I have found Libby Gill's latest book, <a href="http://www.libbygill.com/its-time-to-get-you-unstuck" rel="nofollow"> "YOU UNSTUCK:"</a> Mastering The New Rules of Risk-Taking in Work & Life, to be the most beneficial. The one thing that I found to be most valuable about this book is that I was able to see how I have magnified negative events from the past and have allowed them to hold me back in the present. By knowing this I have learned how to change those patterns- was an ah-ha moment for me.

Hopefully it will help me get out of the financial rut that I seem to be in lately.</a> =-.

I don't know if any of these are really new, but maybe paid more attention to now. Slow and steady wins the race with savings seems to be a more accepted mantra these days. It's all about stability, keeping organized, and staying debt free for the future.

My rule: Automate and monitor. Have all your savings, debt repayment, and investing done automatically, and monitor all your accounts daily using Mint or something similar.

Don't forget frugal is now "in"! ;) I guess that goes with your debt rule. It just occurred to me that in my circle we hear more bragging about how little something cost, and about great deals. It used to be that spending more was a bit of a badge of honor. How passé...
