How Much Does a Dog Cost?

How Much Does a Dog Cost?

For those of you that didn’t know, I’m kind of a dog lover. We have a 50 pound boxer Klaya (named after Cassius Clay; greatest boxer of all time). We have been fortunate that the costs have to her have been minimal, but I know my wife has stated many times that she would pay “whatever it took” to make sure that she was in good health. I know she’s not the only one out there. So me, being the numbers guy, decided to do some research and see what the average cost would be for having a dog. (Sorry to all the cat lovers out there).

Major Costs of Pets

First cost to consider is food. Dogs like to eat and my dog is no exception. A large bad of dog food averages about $25 for a bag. Depending on the size of your dog, you can expect at least one to two bags a month. This is excluding doggie treats which will run your bill even higher.

Just like people, dogs have to go the doctor, too. You can expect vaccines, annual exams, and neutering. Veterinarians cost money and even for a healthy dog, can cost a lot of money. What about the weekend or late night occurrences with your pet? The price just gets higher.

Don’t forget all the extras.

My dog is fortunate to be sporting her second Coach collar, compliments of my wife’s taste. She did buy them on sale at the outlet store, so I have to give her some credit. Collars are just one extra to consider as well as toys, treats, leashes, etc. It’s hard to pass up a new chew toy for dog when we walk buy the pet aisle at Wal-Mart.
The following is a chart that shows the average cost per year for a 100 pound dog.

Dog Item Cost
(Some of these costs may not apply to your situation)

  • Good Quality Dog Food                                                 $70 x 12 = $840
  • Dog Accessories (collar, leash, etc.)                                   $30
  • Dog Toys                                                                                 $30 – $50
  • Vaccines                                                                                         $35
  • Flea, Tick, & Heartworm Prevention                                  $320
  • Dog Treats                                                                                     $200
  • Gasoline To Take Him Places                                          $150 – $300
  • Boarding                                                            $100 – $200 (at $15 – $20 a day)
  • Emergency Costs                                                          $0 – $2500 or more

Total                                                             $1675 or much more

While I don’t know for sure, I assume that we are well above this mark. Dogs are mans’ best friend, just be conscious that a best friend is not always a cheap friend.
